Transport UK has been managing the Stansted Express AirRail service, which is a sub brand within the Greater Anglia business, since 2012 and TUK has overseen significant investment and modal share growth. Rail modal share has grown from 24% in 2012 to record highs of 33% in 2019, which has taken millions of car journeys off the road each year and helped Stansted Airport achieve over 50% public transport modal share – the highest of all UK airports. This modal share increase has been achieved in a highly competitive landscape through a mix of innovative commercial solutions (fares, retail and marketing) and improved service performance.

Stansted Express operate a fleet of recently introduced high capacity trains, designed with the airport traveller in mind. Trains currently depart up to 4 trains an hour, with an average journey time of 50 minutes.

Stansted Express works closely with Stansted Airport to promote rail as a sustainable option and the partnership working with the airport is key to the success of the service. In 2019 Stansted Express was recognised by the Global AirRail Association when it beat other AirRail providers around the world to win Operator of the Year.
