Transport UK Group Launches New Sustainability Strategy

23 July 2025, London - Transport UK Group (TUK) has today launched its new company-wide sustainability strategy, marking a major step forward in its mission to shape the future of low-carbon, integrated transport.

As one of the country’s leading public transport operator owning groups, TUK is committed to delivering greener, more efficient travel through innovation, investment and long-term planning. The new strategy sets out a clear path to achieving net zero emissions, to supporting communities and the natural environment, and to meeting the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals.

From the UK’s first battery-operated trains in Liverpool, to one of London’s largest electric bus fleets, Transport UK is already leading in green transport innovation across its Greater Anglia, West Midlands Trains, East Midlands Railway and Merseyrail networks, as well as 11% of London’s bus routes.

To date, Transport UK has, among other achievements:

  • reduced carbon emissions 21% between 2020-2024,

  • recycled 65% of waste across its operating businesses,

  • made 337 stations across its network accessibility friendly,

  • contributed £354m in social value using the ‘Rail Social Value Tool’; and,

  • 33 of its stations are Wildlife Friendly certified by the Royal Society of Wildlife Trusts.

The strategy builds on TUK’s 20-year legacy and Social Values Charter and will guide how the Group invests in new trains and buses, supports local authorities, and ensures its wider businesses – including Solvd., Advanced Ventures, TransportWorks, and its national rail-replacement services – contribute to a greener future.

Dominic Booth, CEO of Transport UK Group, said:

“Sustainability is at the heart of everything we do. We are excited to launch our first Sustainability Strategy, building on our Social Values Charter. This is a vital step in creating a low-carbon transport system that meets the needs of passengers and communities. As stewards of some of the best-performing train and bus services in the country, we are proud to support our teams and communities as we advance the green energy revolution with new technologies and sustainable solutions that support a growing economy.”

TUK commits to transparency and sharing annual progress reports utilising the Rail Safety and Standards Boards’ Sustainability Maturity Tool.
